Title: a router that will allow throttling/controling each individual device connection
Post by: rcjordan on February 21, 2016, 03:53:54 PM
Quotethe Nighthawk X6 does everything I need it to do. I have my two teenage kid's devices in their own range of static IPs that are cut off from 9PM to 7AM. They're in separate ranges so it's possible to disconnect one kid (grounding, grades, etc) without cutting off the other. It has the QoS and bandwidth management you're looking for as well.

Man, this sure beats unplugging the phone wires on the landline at 2am

I use Gargoyle which is basically a linux distro for routers - many sub-$100 routers support this. I use a Netgear WDNR 3800. If your router supports OpenWRT you could roll this out for free. You can buy a router with gargoyle installed from their website, but it's dead easy to download the binaries and flash your router firmware.

In our case, we need to limit bandwidth in our vacation rental.

In our case, we want to limit total bandwidth of all devices that our renters use. So in other words, they get 150MB per day in aggregate and it's up to them to use 50MB each or one device gets 150MB (this is because we have very limited bandwidth on satellite and the vast majority of people have their iPhones set to sync all kinds of stuff the second they get a wifi connection).

So we simply let them log into a router that is daisy-chained to the main router and we limit all bandwidth on that IP. Done. They can connect 30 devices if they want.

I've been a fan of ASUS routers for some time. They have some of the best throughput and eliminate a lot of network bottlenecks for me. There's a guy who makes a free firmware called Asuswrt-Merlin that takes the proprietary firmware and enables all sorts of functionality. One of those features is a parental control option that lets you control each device's access to the net. I use it to shut off certain devices at night when I'm uploading backups and downloading server logs.

Seconded.

A 2nd choice of brand for me would be the Linksys models (I ignore the Cisco part of the brand..... they're not real Cisco routers IMO)

I don't believe asuswrt-merlin has the one thing that I really needed - the ability to set daily bandwidth quotas based on IP.

With the limited satellite internet in our rental and guest's inability to manage bandwidth (and why would they), I need to take the monthly allotment and divide it in 30 and set that as a daily cap. After a lot of research, Gargoyle was the only firmware I could find that would let me do that without spending a ton of money.

I had to take a look at my router to see if that was an option. If it's in there I didn't see it. I'll look again when I have more time.

update: just picked this up while reading about smarthome router security. paste from a tech thread.

QuoteAsus68rt and am very happy with it also. I loaded ddwrt on it as well
This is the one I have as well.... Asus puts out firmware updates quite often.... And the mobile app is really nice.

I do like the feature for the built in cloud if you plug in a hard drive.....

I especially like the option of killing internet access to a specific device within the app..... For the teens....
