Title: Swedish store with no cashiers: You use a cellphone to do late-night shopping
Post by: rcjordan on March 01, 2016, 01:37:35 PM
Customers simply use their cellphones to unlock the door with a swipe of the finger and scan their purchases. All they need to do is to register for the service and download an app. They get charged for their purchases in a monthly invoice.

The shop has basics like milk, bread, sugar, canned food, diapers and other products that you expect to find in a small convenience store. It doesn't have tobacco or medical drugs because of the risk of theft.

This is going to either make or cost the owner a bunch of money.  Obviously, I wouldn't open one in Detroit or Baltimore.

Self checkouts were all the rage here for awhile.  I wouldn't use them, if I'm in a full priced store I'm not going to do the work unless they pay me.  I'd rather they hire a real human to do that, they need the jobs.  If I'm in Aldi I'll gladly pack my own groceries, but not at a Jewel with higher prices.

The Jewel was paying someone to monitor the self checkouts when they were hardly used.  Finally they tore them all out and and put in a bunch of quick checkout lanes staffed on demand by real people.  Those are much used.

It will be interesting to see if this Swedish store works out.

Self checkouts mean no need to interact with strangers, I'm a fan.
