I was always under the impression that Brits drink a lot compared to Americans. Anyway, I got curious and looked around for data on per-capita consumption by country.

On a global scale you guys are about middle of the pack when you take out the Muslim countries. Apparently the US was one of the wettest countries on Earth before prohibition.
I don't think of Brits as drinking a lot on average, but I think of young Brits as being horrible binge drinkers.
Brits do drink a lot compared to many nations. Though I've found myself in a few places in the US where the entire bar drinks itself under the table - most enjoyable.
It's all relative. If you exercise often and have a good diet, vices such as alcohol in moderation is not a problem and 14 units is taken the piss. A lot of these reports are also factoring in bad diet, young adult binge drinking, sedentary lifestyles, etc.
