They've started using their Android user base to thicken the data as well.  I've had a couple of notifications lately asking me if I'll tell them more about places that I have visited.    They seem obsessed with knowing whether places are "popular with the college crowd".

I've got a Nexus phone, and after the April update I started getting overt notifications from Google Maps to help them add information like this for local venues too.
