I just saw a forum comment where a guy said, "When I Duck-Ducked The Name... "
:-)
Worst name is search. Even Dogpile is better.
> Worst
I thought the same thing, but I remembered it.
>Duck-Ducked
I'm gonna steal borrow that! Thanks.
I'd DD more but I find the responsiveness of their results a bit slow. 3-4 seconds just doesn't cut it compared to G.
So, if Y is worth $4.8B, what's DD worth?
>what's DD worth?
$36.75
I'll take 3.

Low blow. They're worth a bit more than that :P
I took myself off the GG teat a few years ago and have all my defaults set to DDG. There are some cases where I still want to see the GG SERPs, and then I just add !g to the query and I'm off to the races.
Really, using the $/eyeball Y sales price, I'd bet DDG is in the $millions. Verizon should have picked them up, too.
Unfortunately once they do catch the goose that lays golden eggs then all the geeks who currently use them will switch to another engine overnight, They have a very fickle audience.

These are good. Thanks.

Are there any alternatives at this time? Something that's more than a skin for Bing or G?

- StartPage - was the default for the Tor browser for a bit. Better SERPs than DDG sometimes
- searX - Open source metasearch engine that you can run yourself, or use one of their instances. Very hackable
Metasearch seems to be where it's at these days.
>searx
Interesting! Thanks.
Be sure to check out the "Engines" tab (and its sub-tabs for each search type) under preferences. https://searx.me/preferences
> searX
I haven't found the time yet, but I'd like to put this on my own server and have a go at this. The community make it sound pretty easy to setup and run your own instance.
It'll generate serps as rss feeds. I need to background-process this for a while.
> Startpage
Basically it's un-personalized Google, which I like better anyway. This is what I use when I need to search Google. When I need backup for duck-ducking. ;)
> Searx
Wow, great find! I never thought I'd see a meta-search engine that got me excited these days. I do like the way you can choose what engines you want to use (Heck even old Gigablast is there.) Thanks bill!
