Surprisingly, those two memes made some impact on a couple of family members. So, I can be screaming about issues for years and be written off as crazy. But add Seinfeld....hhh

Doubtful. It's not a top-8 concern. They'll start to do a Google search to verify your info, get the autocomplete results and ask whether this is more BS you got from your dangerous online friends, which *is* a top-8 concern.
More seriously... I'm not sure what AI means in this context, but smart sensors and such are actually a great idea for washing machines. They could potentially save a lot of water and energy.
The thing is, you should absolutely not have to interface with them in any way or even know they are there. You should push the button that says "Standard Wash" and it should give the load a few spins, figure out what the color mix is, take a few sniffs and some optical readings and decide how much detergent you need, then start washing and keep checking to see whether or not it needs to keep throwing water and electricity at the problem or whether it can call it done.
There is no reason that you should be able to interact with the system via your smartphone. Fortunately, LG has thought ahead on this. They have made their machines completely inaccessible to smartphone connections. I tried a dozen times to get it to connect (because there are basic features that don't work without a smartphone like a time-delayed start). Wondering whether the problem was just my incompetence, I checked the app reviews and found that overwhelmingly people complain that they cannot connect.
My first preference was a machine with no smartphone features, but I have landed on what may be the most secure machine on the planet - it has a honeypot smartphone app that forces hackers to waste countless attempts trying to connect to a system that does not, in reality, accept connections. I would be more impressed with this security feature if it had been intentional on the part of LG.

After they clean out your wallet. Smart water heaters come to mind. Based on the prices (a few years ago, admittedly) the ROI was non-existent or negative. IMO, you'd do much better with a dumb water heater and a timeclock or smarthome control.
I fundamentally agree. But then I'm the guy who walks around after other people turning off the lights.
I read once that some massive percentage of programmable thermostats never get programmed, and that's why power companies want people to install the "learning" ones - people do not have to program them. The kind of person who has their water heater on a timer gets no benefit from the smart water heater.
That said, I was thinking more like the "intelligence" that is built into truck engines now - shutting down at idle, shutting off cylinders when not needed, that sort of thing. Similar sensors and algorithms in washers can save a lot of water and energy.

That was the promise of the Nest thermostat. So far, I've not been impressed with the savings of the installations I'm familiar with. More convenience, yes. Energy savings, no. (We have Ecobee 4s. Wildly convenient. More comfortable. More energy, not less.)
That's basically my experience. I think humans are too erratic for us to see a lot of benefit from devices that purport to save energy by adapting to behavior. The Nest falls into that category, which is why I ignore PGE's frequent offers of rebates.
I think sensor arrays that observe the actual physical world in real time (how dirty are those sock) do have that potential. Whether you would consider that "smart" or "AI" is another question.
