Title: Death of the Industrial Advertising Complex
Post by: Travoli on September 15, 2016, 11:07:18 PM
On subscription vs. broadcast TV:
"Broadcast television is cursed with being a swimmer, and every 11 minutes someone takes a dump in the pool."

"Advertising is a tax the poor and technically illiterate pay."

Related: Have you noticed how many roadside billboards are AVAILABLE!!  ??  They lost many clients during the recession and some don't appear to be returning.

Yep, local ordinance here forced them to put a smiley face on the blank billboards since there are so many.

>billboards

Plus the trend towards digital electronic billboards means several ads can share the same board, requiring fewer billboards.

All this is surprising since in my state, since we let lawyers advertise on billboards. That should be a bottomless resource for the outdoor advertising industry.

>lawyers

They can advertise here, too, but I haven't seen all that many in our semi-rural area.  In Florida cities, every corner has a billboard for personal injury lawyer scum.

Self-driving cars are upon us, though it'll take a decade for the full impact.  When a person becomes a rider and no longer has to pay attention to the road will they even see billboards??  OTOH, I could make a case that they will be bored and have time to read ads.  Which?

>self-driving

Or will ads be plastered all over the inside of the self-driving cars, especially driverless taxis.  Captive audience.

>Which?

I take in much more from the outside when someone else is driving.

> more from the outside when someone else is driving

But you're thinking of the interior/environment in today's vehicles.  Freed of the need for windows and a view of the outside, our cars will become entertainment cocoons.

Or will the majority be Google/Uber cars?

Or Uber's robo-concierge service which asks if you'd like to stop by the 40% Macy's shoe sale on your way home from work. Only 2 minutes off your route. To confirm, say "yes".

Depends on the price and availability.  If/when we go to electric cars, the floor will drop out of vehicle prices because they are also going to become commodities due to far simpler systems vs combustion engines.

<added>

A couple of companies have already priced the self-driving tech as an add-on for around $5k.

That's what's happening on the subways, everyone is plugged on and on their devices.

>Or Uber's robo-concierge service which asks if you'd like to stop by the 40% Macy's shoe sale on your way home from work. Only 2 minutes off your route. To confirm, say "yes".

That seems very dystopian to me.

>Or will the majority be Google/Uber cars?

I think in urban areas it is going to be more that.  Most people will not have a car, because the cost of ownership just won't make sense.  If you only use a car for 30 minutes a day why would you spend the money to own one for 24/7?  This is already happening with the millennials in SF, most of them do not own cars, but uber everywhere.  I'm sure the economics will continue to move in that direction.

>electric cars

They are all over the place here, and I'm seeing more every day.  I am sure we are in the death throws of the internal combustion engine.  I'm giving it 15 years max before electric cars are the majority sold.

off topic here but:

In the UK, the cost of ownership of an older car is pretty low.

Almost zero depreciation, cheap insurance, and road fund licence if it is frugal.

And when you go to work, dropping the rubbish at the tip is easy to do.. not so easy in an Uber I guess.

Or dropping in on a mate... might be in, might not?  A car owned is still flexible for that.  Its freedom.

also, how will it work with my ducati? Thats pure fun?  An uber bike will not give the same thrill.

not saying its not coming, but there are holes....

Heres another.  How will I tow and launch my boat?
