Them : Here is the URL causing a problem. You need to either fix it or go a a dedicated server (WTF this is a wordpress site with less than 300 users per day!)
Me : Yeah, I can't access that URL. You turned my site off remember?
Them : *silence*
Me : Quietly transfers out
Site down 2 days so far. No warning before hand, just turned it off.

WP can be horrible if it's not cached etc, I can see why they'd get in touch if the installation was genuinely using a lot of CPU. No warning is inexcusable.

Killing sites without warning is inexcusable unless the install is hacked and confirmed to be compromised.
Looks like Chinese spammers were hitting the registration page pretty heavily. Site security was keeping most out though, so it was just resources.
Once I moved them to another host and was actually able to see what was going on it took 30 seconds to fix. I just blocked China in the Cloudflare firewall. Had Siteground bothered to warn us rather than disable us I would have fixed it in minutes rather than have 2 days downtime.

Glad you got it sorted. It's something they would probably see across multiple sites too. Perhaps that's where they're going wrong... whack-a-moling customer accounts rather than sorting the root cause.
I have some shared hosts using 'bitninja' that seems to be quite aggressive blocking spam and automation. It serves a captcha when it doesn't like the IP and if the captcha isn't solved after a number of times, they email the abuse@ of the IP owner saying that the IP is 'attacking other websites'. Something along those lines would've worked well for them here.

I was going to say, there are legit reasons for this - super inefficient scripts, DDOS especially on something like a registration page. If you're on shared hosting and your site is bringing down the server, they have to do something.
That should include immediately notifying you and explaining what they are doing and what you need to be doing.
BTW - can you run Cloudflare with this site? That will catch a huge number of Chinese spammers.
Justhost did the same to a client of mine because of hacked file. No warning, no email, nothing, we had to contact support once the site went down (which we only found out about because her clients were telling her!) just to find out what was going on, which took a couple of hours in itself. Had a similar issue with a hacked file with hawkhost, they quarantined the file, let me know what they had done and kept the website up. A world of difference. They were getting hit with a DDOS and the server went down. I contacted them and they told me within minutes that they were transferring out until they found the culprit (another account, not mine). Then emailed me once it was fixed. As you all know you only know how good a host is once the s&*^ has hit the fan and it has a few times, hawk have been brilliant every time.

Tech support couldn't help me, had to wait on the abuse dept to get back to me. Sites were down for quite a while, it seems their abuse dept. doesn't get in a hurry for anything, current/existing client or not.
The site wasn't even compromised, just older WP version. I was livid. I've spent thousands with these idiots over the years.

Pair did that? Was that on a shared account? If they ever did that to one of my dedicated boxes they'd be in a world of hurt from the legal folks.
I can understand them looking for old WP installs as they seem to be easy pickings for the script kiddies. However, a bit of notice would be expected before action was taken.
Yep....I think the acct is considered shared...its not vps or dedi...but I get my own IPs, etc.
Quite the fiasco, a week or two's notice would have been nice.
Just to give more details: the site had not been hacked. Core and all plugin were up to date. Chinese spanners had been hitting the registration form, although not in great numbers. Once we moved we simply used cloud flare to block Chinese traffic from the registration page. Would have done this on siteground if they hadn't turned it off.
Found out a few more things about Siteground whilst moving away from then, which make me think that they are even scummier than I initially thought.
1. If you use their installer it injects a page onto your site singing their praises and linking back to them for their own little (and poorly thought out) link network
2. They also add their own admin level user to your account (WTF, seriously???)

Friend of mine has several sites there. I just checked one that's about 2 months old and didn't see anything.
Does the admin user show up in the WP dash for users?
Does the page show up in the list of pages in WP?
Yes to both (I think). Doing it from memory as I deleted ours
I think that it is only when you get them to create a new install using the "one click install" rather than any site you migrate.
ok thanks. He just checked over his 17 installs and didn't see anything but will be on the lookout and planning to move away from this host.
