Title: Best Plugin for wordpress migration?
Post by: Leona on October 05, 2016, 05:01:37 AM
So I am finally doing the job that I have put off for *cough cough erm* 2 years (maybe more  :-\) and upgrading my server and sorting out all of my accounts and websites (separating money sites from projects and family websites).

So there is going to be a lot of wordpress migrations. Same host so the nameservers may be the same. Was wondering which plugin you would recommend nowadays for a hassle free migration. It has been a while since I looked it up and a few more have popped up but I trust your guys opinion over anything I find on the tinterweb.

Why not just dump the databases and transfer the files? I think that would be a lot easier than using a plugin, if one exists.

WP does have an import/export feature and it works pretty well for moving content between sites (but you still need to move over all your theme files, plugins, etc before you do the import/export otherwise you might not have all the database tables you need). I've used it when you want to combine two sites, for example. You export all the posts from the site that's going away and import them into the site that will live on.

But again, I wouldn't bother. If you're on shared hosting, you should be able to just do a full export of the site from CPanel and then import it on a new server.

Thanks Ergophobe, unfortunately is not as simple as that a cpanel move as I am splitting the sites up. WP export also doesn't do the job as some of these are complex woocommerce. A cloner or as you say file move is the way but I would prefer to use a cloner if possible as I would hope that it would deal with folder permissions etc as well, rather than me having to mess with it all. I am looking for something that is the least manual as possible.

Also as they have been sitting on these servers for years I would like a clean move of each site, a fresh start of sorts.

There are loads of plugins that exist, I have used xcloner in the past and I believe backup buddy is quite good. However, if anyone has experience of either and others is would be great to get feedback on them.

I would ask 4eyes. He has done more with Wordmess than anyone else I know, cloning sites, rinse and repeat. etc.

Brilliant plugin, used it for several sites - small and larger.

Well I went around the houses trying the different ones (I was getting a few warnings on duplicator so decided to give it a miss) and ended back up on the old horse xcloner, then I thought life is to short and decided to pay someone to do it for me! ;D

Thank you for your help guys.
