Dan looks a little too, erm, upscale to be a true WHer. ...Though the two dots of grease on his hoody were a good start.
I've been following Dan for years, but took a many year hiatus and was just looking into what he's been up to the last decade and found that.
He's from a small town in Iowa, but his parents were classical musicians who escaped the Holocaust as kids because they were on a kibbutz as teenagers when the Nazis wiped out their entire town. So he says he grew up in a town much like the one his parents were born into except instead of 1500 Jews, there were four Jews, all named Bern. And since then he's gone folk and urban skate punk and all manner of things that make him hard to pin down. Some music sounds like the earliest Bob Dylan, some like country, some like angry punk, some just beautiful and lyrical.
So I don't know as "upscale" is correct, but "hip" might be. Interesting guy. I've seen him live twice. One as the best live performance I've ever seen. The audience was blown away. The other was the worst live performance I've ever seen. The audience was more or less booing him off stage (I think drugs were involved as he seemed to be unable to finish a song).
But New American Language is a great album. It should have been a classic that made him rich, but it didn't.
