I want a tablet to read stuff and browse the web. Nothing fancy, but I do want something that will do the job and won't be sluggish. Also a good bang for hte buck.

If you want inexpensive but still decent then you would probably be fine with a name brand Android tablet from one generation back. A few years ago we bought some of those generic $60 seven inch tables, they weren't the best, battery life was spotty and the construction was poor. Soon after we bought a couple of seven inch refurbished Samsung tablets for ~$100 each and they have held up well to daily use for close to three years now. If you just want to surf the web, watch videos and read stuff you don't need to go high end.
We also have an iPad and it has performed well for five years now. They're over priced and I would never buy one (we won ours in a contest), but it has proven to be a quality product.
I'm partial to Samsung tablets as I prefer Android. If I were to buy one today I'd shop for the best deal at costco for a sammy tablet and be done.
>>Samsung
I won one of the first generation Samsung tablets a few years back and it held up great for years. Until my 5 year old jumped on it and broke the screen. But other than that it was great. If I were in the tablet market Samsung is where I would start.
Chromebook.
touch screen with keyboard.
Great Battery life, bigger screen. Amazing value.
Go to Apple and look at their refurbished iPads.

Or Gazelle. https://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/catalog/ipads
I don't know which generations are which for iPads, but if you go back two generations on an iPhone, they are way cheap
My eldest has got into Xbox, so I loiter around CeX stores from time to time (a less damning phrase to type than to say aloud!). Really low prices on used items + 2 year warranty on everything. I'm impressed.
This is no help to grnidone (UK only), but might be to someone else.

Amazon Fire HD.
Nothing fancy, does the job and is cheap.
Mind you, I always think I know what I want. It's only after I find out what I need.

I got an early Kindle Fire HD and am still quite happy with it. Good for web surfing. We love the Miracast to TV.
For actual "reading" I prefer paper or a Kindle Paper White.
