DeepMind, the artificial intelligence research arm of Alphabet, recently published a pair of papers suggesting ways to adapt neural networks to deal with the challenge. Valpola wasn't impressed. "I've been working on that for a long time, something like eight years ago we started work on something very similar as they are publishing now. Been there, seen that, doesn't work."
The reason it won't work, Valpola says, is because it's still based on the digital model of discrete pieces of information. To overcome the object relations problem, he believes, artificial intelligence needs to be capable of processing continuous data signals – which means, paradoxically, that it needs to become more analogue.
