These are just the national chains and don't count the local and regional stores closing.

Or not opening. I've never seen the mom & pop small business owners so anemic.  There used to be a fairly steady supply. Now... crickets chirping.

Our local Kmart and RadioShack both closed a couple of years ago.  I feel like the demise of both those brands was because they were slow to adapt.  Perhaps Kmart would have died eventually anyway, but they were imploding when both Target and Walmart grew.  Radioshack should have been positioned to take advantage of the cell phone market and before that the PC market.
