Ouch!
As I type this, it's 6C and the ground is dry and bare and there's no winter weather in the forecast. Another warm, drought winter for us :-(
Yeow! All kinds of stuff breaks down at that temp. I've been reading about CA's obscenely low temps, cancelled events, etc. Stay safe. An online acquaintance in Cedar Rapids, IA says his neighbor's anti-freeze froze in his truck engine since he'd only had it protected down to ZERO f.
Compared to BW, our high today will be a relatively balmy 6.6c (44f). Lows are around -5.5c (22f) and have been that way for a few days now. Forecast says more of the same for the next 5-6 days. My South Carolina son-in-law's diesel truck was getting to be damn hard to start while here for the holidays, not being used to freezing temps. I suggested a dipstick-style block heater but we found out that his truck had the block heater option already installed --he'd just never had any reason to use it.

Back in the 70s, my older brother lived in downtown Chicago for a few years. He drove an air-cooled VW , so no problem with the coolant freezing, but he had to bring in the car battery at night. His stint in IL is where I learned about block heaters.
Looking like we might get some snow/freezing rain/sleet here in Jacksonville early Wednesday morning. I am looking forward to seeing everyone here lose their minds and shutting the city down because of a quarter inch of snow.
I was in Houston once when they had 1/2-inch. EVERYTHING shut down. Kids were flattening cardboard boxes and using the on-ramps to the interstate as sled runs.
60 to 78 here this month, thats a harsh winter. I'm feeling cold.
Florida sees snow. Sorta.
