Title: RC, I just found out my grandfather's family lived in NC for 10 generations
Post by: littleman on April 24, 2018, 06:35:17 PM
My dad's dad came out to California during WWII, but before that his family apparently lived in NC since 1660.  Odd, CoreCon was the first time I've ever been to that part of the country.  Apparently, I have a bunch of cousins there I know nothing about.

You might want to keep it that way. hhh

What city/town was the nearest to where your granddad was born?

I'm not in contact with any of them but my dad is sort of going through the process of learning about his roots.  There is a whole community of people seeking long lost relatives via DNA research (I didn't know this was a thing)  -- he and someone on the other side both just happen to be seeking out information on their extended family.

Anyway apparently most of them are in:
Halifax County
Edgecombe County
Alleghany County
Wilkes County
Ashe County

Halifax & Edgecombe Counties are west of me by 100 miles.  If I had to bet, I'd say that your ancestors first settled in what is now Halifax County and migrated south, then west within the state.

If your interested in that area, check out the Halifax Resolves.
QuoteThe Halifax Resolves were the first official provincial action for independence in any of the colonies.

You could probably be a member of the SAR!  (Sons of the American Revolution)  To be in it, you have to be blood related to one of the first patriots.  (Person who fought in the Revolutionary War.)

Such an odd thing for me, the rest of my family has only been in the US for a few generation.

The DirecTV dish on the back totally makes it -- rent free living, and lots of room for guests.
