I can't figure out what the opening diameter is because Canon uses drop-in filters (they go in the back, which is 52mm). But the overall diameter is 163mm, almost double the Nikon.
What's amazing about the Nikon is the f-stop - I don't know as a full-frame SLR lens has ever been made with an f-stop below 1. That's really low.
The thing is, even with a 1.2, it's hard to use at the bottom end of the range for anything other than landscape. Your depth of field is going to be incredibly narrow at 0.95. With a 58mm lens, I'm guessing that it will be impossible to have both the nose and the ears in focus for a portrait. If you get close and fill the frame with someone's face, I wonder whether you can get the nose and eyes in focus. For flower photography, down at 1.2 you already struggle to get the stamens and petals in focus in the same image.

The manual focus makes sense, since this is designed for low light, and the auto focus is usually not very good in the dark. As for steady hands, again, this is for low light, so I would guess they assume you'll have it on a tripod.
