Title: Mycroft Home Assistant
Post by: Brad on November 23, 2018, 11:43:08 AM
Move over ALexa, Siri, Google home.  There is an open source alternative that doesn't spy on you: Mycroft.ai
https://mycroft.ai/

You can install the software on Raspberry Pi even.

Looks like they are about to release 2nd gen device which should be more consumer friendly.

Mycroft seems to be growing legs.  It's now on my smarthome wish list.

I'm still waiting for the Mark 2 device to become available.  When it does, I'll probably switch to it and retire Alexa/Eco.

RC, are you wishing for the device or to put it on Raspberry pi?

I'm just beginning to connect the dots, but the end goal is to replace Alexa voice control of the smarthome stuff, making it entirely local.  The hardware path I'll take will be determined by what/if/when Hubitat makes an integration module.  That said, the developers tend to be awash in rpi servers already, so Debbie says that's where it'll happen --if it does happen.

Hubitat has excellent TTS capability already.  And it's supposedly already able to be run on Sonos and perhaps some other speakers without the cloud.  (I'm currently running G Home with the mics off.)  I've already ported all my Alexa repeat reminders to Hubitat.  Now I want to go after the one-off reminders & timers which make up the vast majority of our Alexa use.  To do that, I'm going to need STT and Mycroft keeps popping up in the searches.
