The other strategy is to separate (firewall) your silos.

It's not privacy focused, but it is free and by using it you are not handing Google your inside traffic information.  It's also very full featured like Google Analytics.

Yandex is up front about why it's free, they are a search engine, they want to discover URL's.

If we ever go to war with Russia I'll just remove the code.

I lost interest in Matomo (formerly Piwik) when I found out about Snowplow (https://snowplowanalytics.com).
