My experience has been that most Slack channels I've been invited to die for lack of interest.
I found it worked great the first time I used it to encourage collaboration in a seminar. Worked so-so the second time. I'll probably try it again, but it's all group dynamics. You have to have a few active users and my seminars only have 8-10, so there's always a good chance nobody will take to it.
I suppose when you have a company of 30 you force onto it, then you're sure to have a few active users and sure to have it ruin your life.
I think the use case for Slack is this.
- Slack: casual conversation, quick questions. If it goes on Slack, you are saying "go ahead and ignore this, anything important will come through another channel."
- Asana, Basecamp, etc: organizing, delegating and communicating about actual work
- phone or face to face: important communication that needs an answer now.
- email: Banned for team communication. Used for kitty videos, vendor and client communication if you can't get them on Asana (basically impossible with vendors, so email can't be killed).
I've used slack for various different things and never really liked the UI. I never felt like I had a good flow and it felt like a cross between a forum script and IM.

A lot of these are mobile first platforms and they need a better desktop experience. Might be part of it.
For me Slack is really desktop first. It is for people who peer into the blue muse all day long and want to type
I meant the dev is mobile-first focused so that desktop is back-seated. Slack is probably the least offensive here, but still applies.
