Title: Was I a little sh1t?
Post by: eurotrash on March 30, 2011, 06:52:01 AM
I live in the same house as I was brought up in.

I'm in visiting last night with the neighbour 2 doors down cos she is 85 and needs me to go to the shops sometimes for her.

I was mentioning that my son who is 3 is a little, how would one say it.... Bugger

She answers "Yes Mrs Poulson and I were talking the other day, we think it's payback time."

Judging by my youngest, I was the devil incarnate.

Another shit here.  Some might say that I never entirely grew out of it.

Got facebooked about a school reunion recently and have to say I'm not going.  My little shit days went on through most of school at least so I can't be bothered with that crap.

Mind you,  I was made to feel better about 2 weeks ago when I bumped in to someone from school.  I was there thinking "Shit, I hope I wasn't a shit to her" when she said to me "Listen, I know I was a shit at school - I hope I wasn't nasty to you".  Maybe we all were.

That's awesome!

I grew up with virtually no rules at home, so I never broke any (school was a little different story). I've never done well with structure and my parents never tried to enforce one, for which I'll always be grateful.

No bedtime, no curfew, no limits on watching TV (in later life my mother explained that she didn't limit us to an hour of TV like some parents because she couldn't get us to watch an hour of TV and she was always hoping we would, so she could have a whole hour in peace). When I was five, she would put a lunch in my backpack, send me out into the woods, and tell me to be home for dinner. And that's pretty much what I did... crossing rivers on logs, building teepees, lighting fires, all that good stuff.

The only time I remember thinking I was going to get in trouble when I was eight and decided my dad need more light in the garage so I drilled a hole in the wall, ran wires into his workshop, attached a light to one end and plugged it in. Unfortunately, I didn't understand the difference between 12V DC and 110V AC, so my setup blew the main on the house (don't know why it didn't just blow the circuit breaker or flat out kill me).

Didn't get in trouble for that either. I think my secret was that compared to my older brother, I was an angel, so when I did stuff like that it was more like "Well, it's about time he learn about current" and not "What! You drilled a hole in the wall!" Plus my dad grew up with almost no rules so he thought it was normal.

Funny, we thought my parents were so uptight, but thinking back, I can't believe how they rolled with it.

I got my first motorcycle when I was 4 and routinely rode alone in the strip mines not long after.

I got my first rifle when I turned 7 and hunted small game until I was big enough to shoot deer.

I learned to cook and do laundry when I was 8 and had my own key to the house.

I started smoking pot in 6th grade and lost my virginity in 7th, after getting drunk with my girl one night, after sneaking out of my house.

When I turned 16 I made my first 1000 mile trip to Florida less than 2 weeks after I got my license.

...and after I started driving, things really started getting out of hand, since the drinking age was only 18 in DC and my fake ID business was booming:)

I like the way this has turned into the MacGyver thread :-)
