Heading the same route as China & North Korea; you have to control the information if you want to control the people. I was so optimistic about Russia's future in 1991.

I had a room mate who was a Russian scholar who had just returned from a year or two in Russia at the time. I was not optimistic. She pretty much called it. She basically said "all they have is vodka and sex" and pretty much predicted Putin (not by name of course).
On paper they looked pretty strong. They had a lot of industrial know-how, incredible natural resources and high literacy rates. I didn't know at the time that high natural resources are often a cures (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_curse).
