Have you looked at new car designs lately? Half of them look like a Yeti cooler mated with a lamprey. Most car commercials now end with a shot of their "lineup," which is to say, eight crossovers distinguished only by how much their grilles are yawning. In 2017, construction crews in London removed a fatberg—"a 130-ton mass of sanitary products and cooking fat"—from the city's aging sewage system. A small amount of the fatberg was put on display in a museum, but the rest was secretly injected with human growth hormone and turned into the Infiniti QX80.
What I'm saying is, at least the Cybertruck looks different.
And while Musk has a habit of promising a lowest tier of prices that never actually arrive, the Cybertruck seems like it will be priced competitively: $39,000 to $69,000. That places it in the same approximate range as other pickup trucks, which are America's best-selling and most profitable vehicle segment.

I think it's ugly, but it has people talking and talking. Even people who *never* talk about cars.
And, at the low-end, it's actually Tesla's cheapest AWD vehicle. And with a cargo capacity of 3500 pounds, that makes it close to a one-ton truck. So it's a beefy vehicle.
And the high-end model, with a 500-mile range is pretty impressive. I suspect once the Musk Marketing Machine winds down, they will change the styling. It's sort of like the assault vehicle version of the Delorean - crazy styling, stainless steel body.

Perhaps they found a copy of RC's blockbuster book - "Ugly Sites Sell."
I think part of it is that a lot of the selling point for a pickup is that it's a MAN's truck and there's no better way to feel like a MAN than having a Cummins Diesel. If you have to go for gas, that's okay if you have a lot of self-confidence and aren't worried about testosterone levels.
But electric? Seriously? You're going to show up at the job site or the VFW in an ELECTRIC pickup. Dude, you might get your man license revoked.
But a monster, assault-style, pickup that carries almost TWO tons (I said almost one above - bad math) that puts that an F150 to shame and can go toe to toe with an F250, even a low-end F350. Now that's a man's truck.
I think that is driving the styling.

That's already a problem for Tesla owners. This will be worse. If you opt for the AWD models, that automatically kicks you into the 'off-road use' pricing. That's really going to skyrocket your insurance costs.
Exterior panels need to be carbon fiber, kevlar, or a mix.

I had a small moment of glory in a small-town restaurant because of this thread.
I was the only woman in the morning coffee crowd, and a bunch of farmers were discussing the Tesla truck. There was an opening for me to casually mention that the 500 mile range was pretty impressive.
All the old geezers were surprised and impressed that I knew anything about it! :)

My gut tells me that the average pickup truck buyer wants a truck that looks like a truck. Especially if you have a job that requires a large truck, such as branch manager of a regional bank (https://worldhistory.medium.com/as-an-american-i-face-the-worst-possible-hardship-4-gas-785e8f075002).
When you layer on Tesla pricing, I think the market becomes small quickly.
