Traffic / Re: Rank Checking?

Weirdly, it's what I was thinking these days - with SMM exploding last year or two, I think people don't depend so heavily on the first three places of google. And as in your example, Rupert, if you can convince a client not to obsess on the pr, you might - might - make a point there too. But it's an improbable perspective... You know, kinda what you think when the flight attendant who tells you that you're a dozen times safer in air - "yeah, right!.." :)

I use the Rank Tracker from the SPS package since the reports looks quite fancy if you need to present them on clients (plus, if you do care actually on ranking, it gives you good set of features to check it)

Marketing / Gmail keeps kicking me out...
March 07, 2011, 09:59:17 AM
Got some serious amount of gmail accounts blocked these days, asking for phone verification. I use proxies, I connect trough other people's net, I tried not to show any hyperactivity on them (such as automated registration ) - nada, sooner or later he just kicks me out and say "ok spammer, give me your phone number!!"

anybody else experiencing similar issues these days?

yes, certainly smartphones have made an excellent breakthrough last year. I think china manufacturers has lot to do with that and I bet companies like Huawei and Privileg are responsible for a good portion of this 87%, as they made smarphones affordable to people in developing country, allowing local mobile operators to brand them and distribute them for under $200 a piece.

personally, i don't like writing on my phone - he keeps correcting me! If i was looking for such a feature, I would have carried around my father...

finally some nice usage of the Street View technology :)

you're probably right about people picking up more on IE, however this is not just a vulnerability of the browser, it's an OS one which can be exploited through the IE (only) and I find it ridiculous, considering the resources of MS. You know, it's one thing when my $30 sw crashes and I lose some data, but I would expect more from fortune 500 company with over 40 yrs in the industry.

btw, I don't use it from years either, but sometimes it's not up to me :) Just yesterday I installed a new app which automatically opens IE and apparently, developers love it so much they don't give me the option to switch.

Traffic / Re: What's helped your blog post go viral?

I think getting a really awesome content is job number one - I understand you were asking something else actually, but if your content sucks nevermind how you will deliver it to people - they won't pass it over. IMO, unlike most techniques, viral marketing does not allow you to use lousy material, as your success depend on the user's reaction. Some of the stuff that have proved to attract people

- stunning, attractive titles
- Controversial topics causing violent reactions from the reader
- Free items (something nice, though, not total garbige), plugins, applications, files, services, ANYTHING cool and free
- Offbeat day-to-day items, especially the fun ones
- All kind of funny stuff

Obv that's not all but can give you an idea. Now, let say that you're promoting an aff blog oriented in notebooks, pocketbooks, pc and so on. You can write a nice review on this cool laptop bag, which transforms in a table ( believe it or not, i received several times a link showing this exact item, i guess people fidn it very original)

then, other than the PR and some social bookmarking, you could also go some big general forums, find the related section and post it, you can buy/make a fake FB profile and post it/send it via message to the friendlist (less probable to earn a ban if the content you send around is interesting), some organic ranking (commenting in order to keep on the Real time search can be a true blessing in this cases but only works on very hot topics like news or scandals) and so on.

Of course there might be some nice strategic tactics, but the these types of content will get you there without performing any special tricks :)

Hardware & Technology / Re: Mozy scraps unlimited backups

You could try here, heard from a friend the service is quite ok (even the cheaper plan cost more, but if they change the prices as announced, I think this one is way more convenient bearing in mind  it's unlimited)

Water Cooler / Re: How Do You Reward Yourself?

Getting away from anything that has an OS for few days, that's a reward n#1 for me. If I have the slightest chance, i go in some green area, in summer often with the bike

In the future i'd like to exchange the green area with a greek island  ;)

the Tweaky wiki :)

I think it's an awesome idea and even if it's not updated regularly it could be still very useful, as there is always something new you may learn (especially valid for abbreviations!)

no idea. I think they are still looking for a way to monetize this without charging the users (obviously very few people would pay a fee for a number with an extension when for some small amount per month you can get your own virtual number)

what I was wondering is why they got Cyprus on the list and UK disappeared...

Water Cooler / Re: USDA New School Lunch Guidelines

I think these are really great news for USA residents...

I remember how impressed i was over something i saw in one documentary, exploring the issues caused by fast food industry - I think it was either "SuperSize me" or "Food inc" - where they showed a school where were studying mainly "problematic" children; i.e. kids being expelled from other places due to aggressive behavior. In that school, they resorted to a catering supplier which provides only fresh prepared and healthy food, so on the menu there were no fries, no snacks, not even soda, only water in the vending machines. Now the amazing thing was that after changing the menu the school management reported a distinct change in their students behavior...they stopped being so angry after all.

Now i'm not saying that anyone who has anger issues can eat a salad and make them go away :) But this case is certainly very indicative on how food can affect your body and make you the person you are in all ways
