Hardware & Technology / Bye, Wintel
June 12, 2026, 02:13:51 PM
Getting away from windows except on media/sim pcs. I cannot believe win still has 2-3 different interfaces cobbled together. Mac is a much smoother and easier experience these days and that's what most want at the office.

On my simrig, I just upgraded to an AMD cpu, for the first time ever. Intel has really dropped the ball on innovation in chip tech the last several years.

Hardware & Technology / In the age of AI...

I have serious trouble believing stuff like this:

until I read that it first appeared online over 10 years ago. I still have doubts that I wouldn't have had then.

I've been wondering if this was an issue on the horizon. With the costs of hardware (RAM for example), power (datacenter going up in Utah that requires more power than the entire state) and using up natural resources like water to run those datacenters, what is the actual overall expense of pushing this envelope and at what point does that become more expensive than humans doing the work? Some believe we are already there.

Just catching up here (sup y'all) and wondering your thoughts on the next couple of years, economically overall?

Hardware & Technology / MacOS from a windows fanboy
August 22, 2023, 12:43:11 AM
Well, ex fanboy. I'm still mad about what they did to win7 with the mobile shoehorn and cannot believe they never cleaned it up.

So I decided recently I want to try a mac to see what the fuss is all about, since a 13" macbook air recently dropped to 750 on sale.

Welp, in short, I'm sold. I love the interface and the hardware. I've always lived with little Windows quirks due to different hardware configs, but now that software side is a mess too, there is no comparison.

I'm a long ways from replacing my daily driver workstations, but I can see it happening at some point. For now, the power and versatility over a chromebook is a boon and I love the look and feel of the whole kit. It blows away similarly priced windows offerings. I should have done this sooner.

Water Cooler / MFG orders from china down 40%
December 05, 2022, 10:35:16 PM
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/04/manufacturing-orders-from-china-down-40percent-in-demand-collapse.html

"The global trading map is being rapidly redrawn, with EU-U.S. trade and investment in U.S. rising sharply as economic ties between the West and China are subjected to critical scrutiny. This year, the U.S. has imported more goods from Europe than China – a big shift from the 2010s, according to Project 44."

emphasis mine.

Title stolen from a reddit comment, but debbie says it has a ring to it.

Couple lured away by people living in a forest: "Deputies said they received information that the two women may have been part of a group of people "living off the grid" in the forest, and the group was reported to be "armed and potentially violent."
https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2022/08/16/apopka-man-killed-in-robbery-during-visit-to-national-forest-deputies-say/

There are estimates of up to 45k people living in this forest, according to a non-profit established to rescue kids from there.

"Flash Mob" (flashrob? I'm going with that) of over 100 people storm and loot convenience store during a "street takeover" where they block off streets at a 4-way stop light and do stunts in middle of the intersection. Events are coordinated via social media.

They failed to do it with software on win8. So, now, they've given everyone win10 basically for free, and the next iteration requires a hardware piece that they can use to finally build their walled garden.

This will take years to fully implement, and there's a good chance they'll botch it and have to back up and punt. Regardless, it seems like win10 is end of the line for me.

I can't believe I'm typing this out, but I've been shopping for a Macbook. It almost feels wrong. Almost.

Hell should be freezing over any minute now. Know any good tattoo removal services? hhh
