Visualising Global Conflicts Through Maps

https://warmapper.org

This has been in my bookmarks for a couple of weeks therefore I don't remember where I found it, but maps are handy.

Tourists staying in short term rentals, rather than hotels and resorts, seem to be cited as causing some of the friction, which makes sense if the locals can't escape tourists even at home. At least I see this mentioned in many of these articles.

Back 2019 - 2023ish and driving on a two lane highway where you go right through small towns in Iowa, I noticed a lot of fully restored old tractors from the 70's and 80's for sale outside of machine shops.  I found out later there was huge demand from smaller family farmers for these tractors because they could do the job without costing $100's K and could be repaired and didn't require waiting for critical parts from China and a computer tech.

I hope they succeed.  I hope this spreads to major household appliances.

That's a step in the right direction.

Water Cooler / The Register
June 02, 2026, 08:20:36 AM
Way back in the WmW days The Register was kinda the upstart, sort of snarky, cynical, tech news blog and lots of people sort of rolled their eyes and dismissed it compared to CNet and the other more established tech news outlets.  But here we are 20 years later and "El Reg" is still going strong with no paywall while many of the others have disappered or gone paywall.

I know I didn't expect it to last, but it has while others owned by big corporations got consumed by mergers with even bigger corporations and gutted.

Anyway, it's weird how this all played out but I'm grateful they are still around because I'm to cheap for paywalls.

My goal is to be in and out of the grocery store in max. 30 minutes.  I know the layout, I know what I'm going to buy, get in, check the use by dates, duck and weave, chaff and flares and get out. Rarely ever goes that way for the reasons outlines in that article.

Good read.

https://www.joanwestenberg.com/the-costco-theory-of-the-internet/

QuoteCostco never promised perfect quality or the best product in every category; and it isn't doesn't claim to be a temple of taste. It sells enormous muffins, bulk socks, patio furniture, protein shakes, car tyres, petrol, hearing aids, rotisserie chickens, appliances, and tubs of dip large enough to drown any and all sorrows.

But more than that: Costco sells a higher floor.

The military used to have water treatment (chemical) tabs for troops in the field, probably still do, but I don't know what bugs they kill.  Still better than nothing.

In an emergency, iodine, so many drops per gallon, will add some protection but I forget the ratio.

I knew this only because I read an article a few weeks ago.  Otherwise I was clueless that Ask (Jeeves) was still around.
