Landlines are being sunset all over the US. The telecoms, especially ATT, has spent a lot of money lobbying on this, but like many things in the US, it is happening on a state-by-state basis.

They have tried to do this in CA, but the state Public Utilities Commission shut them down. For those of us in rural areas, there is zero chance of seeing fiber and we have lots of large dead spots for cell coverage.

But they will achieve their goal in practice simply by failing to do maintainence on the existing lines.
