Reminds me of a time in Florence, though the map has already ruined the story. My friend and I were in this lounge area at a hostel and this blonde, stereotypically Scandanavian looking woman asked a question.

We didn't catch it the first time. "Sorry?" She asked again. No go. Finally we understood, "Do you know what time it is?" Then we started talking o her for a while and got better at deciphering the accent. I had this uncomfortable feeling (subsequently confirmed) that my friend was on the verge of telling her that her English was very good. I cut him off and asked, "Where are you from?"

"Liverpool."

The followup - ran into her on the street, said hello, she said something incomprehensible and foreign sounding back. I said, "Sorry, I thought you were someone else." She said, "No, you're the guy I was talking to yesterday."

Then of course there is the fact that every American I know who has watched Trainspotting had to rewind to the beginning and turn on the subtitles.

We had to get somebody from York to interpret the Scots for us, but Calum....

I do OK around the midlands and -usually- London.  DK & Stockholm were easy, no problems at all.
