Great slide

I've mentioned this before, I think, but I used to do a "staying alive" evening presentation in Yosemite about how not to die. I would put slides up and ask how many people had been killed by each thing since the park's beginning. It would go like this:

Slide: Bear
Audience: a dozen

Slide: mountain lion
Audience: 10

Slide: rattlesnake
Audience: ooh... lots

Slide: Deer
Audience: snickers

Slide: tree
Audience: laughter

Slide: results
Bear: 0
Mountain Lion: 0
Rattlesnake: 0 (two possibles)
Deer: 1
Trees: 26
Heart Disease (US total): 697,000

Audience laughs, shake heads

Semi-related in that it includes the same slide, but has 24 more posts on different topics.

The general theme is "things not covered well in the media, but which will be studied by historians"

I'm not a Twitter user generally, so I'm not sure whether this is really a persistent link to the full set, but for now it should be the first 25 posts following that link

I am only able to see the first slide with out logging in.   Do you mind posting a few examples?

Mostly they are things you know intuitively or explicitly, but it is a nice collection.

I assume if I post the links to the individual posts, you'll be able to see those. This is the sort of thing that should be a blog post, not a Twitter thread, but his website is nothing but an email signup form.

I just don't get why someone would let Elon Mush so fully own their audience.

2. The Rise Of Negative Media

Since 2010, the media massively increased headlines that use fear, anger, disgust, and sadness.

It has also decreased articles of neutrality and joy.

It's no surprise that few media outlets are covering this meta point.

graphics: sharp up and to the right curves for headlines coded as "anger" "disgust" "fear" "sadness", a hump in 2012 or so for "joy" then decline, very steep down and to the right on emotionally "neutral" headlines.

Proportion of elderly over 65 (worldwide?)
2015: 13.1%
2060: 40.1%

That one surprised me by how low the proportion is now and how high it is projected to get. It's easy to forget that many countries are still very very young.

Fox: My Pillow is the biggest

Rise of obesity.

Nice time lapse graphic from 1980s to present. We all know this story, but what is striking is just how radically different it was in the 1990s.

European friends in the early 1990s when I lived in Switzerland would often say how shocked they were at the prevalence of obesity, but no state was over 20% until 1997. Most states were under 10% in 1985.  Only Colorado was under 25% by 2020.

videogame industry is much bigger than the movie industry - about 4.5X the 2018 box office. Maybe 10X the 2021 box office

https://twitter.com/george__mack/status/1679570047466078213?s=20

I'm not sure comparing box office receipts to total game industry revenue makes any sense - I have hardly ever gone to a movie in the last 20 years, but I have handed over plent of money to the studios through other channels.

Wow thanks Ergo, that post was quite a bit of work.

Confluence of events. Injured toe. Wife away. I was sitting with my foot elevated and rather bored. It was either that or watch TV (toe is improving... no big deal long term I think).

Rupert

....and too much to absorb for 1 sitting!  I need to come back to those.

hope the toe gets better :)
