I wonder if this was the inspiration for the movie Rebel Ridge which follows the same basic plot with a lot of embellishment into a full-blown action film. And they move the setting to the South because, of course, that's where all the corrupt rural police are[1], with the corrupt urban police all being in DC, NY, SF and LA [2].
