Basics (my house has a good number of these features):

Orient the house into prevailing wind, if possible.

Doors front & rear

Windows in primary living & sleeping area.  IMO. double-hung is the best type

HIGH ceilings --particularly in the daytime living areas

Stairwell large & open

Center hallway on 1st floor beside stairway. Ideally, this hallway extends the entire depth of the house to the above front & rear doors.

Large attic hatch in ceiling of top floor with 'remote' opening & closing

Large, screened louvers in the gable ends and/or attic ventilators. Or dormers with louvers and/or awning-type windows to shed ran.
