Nest (AI) t/stat vs programmable t/stat

Strictly from an energy-saving standpoint, which do you believe has the potential to save the most money?  Personally, I think that aggressive programming of the defaults would be more hard-nosed than the settings that the AI would adopt.  But I don't have a Nest.

Nest was started because most programmables never get programmed.

The people I know like it for its ability to be controlled over the network and, in one case, to lock it to only permit certain temperature ranges.

Another thing it has that at least my programmable does not have is the ability to program high and low temps, so if you have heat and A/C it will not suddenly start running the A/C because it's 68 degrees out and you have the temp set to 65.
