This is all I got and according to this article there could be a number of different scenarios.

http://www.ibtimes.com/why-apple-may-be-building-search-engine-its-own-1904336?

I can see them cobbling together a noncrawling engine of some sort.

This may dovetail in with the Yahoo search being pitched to Apple rumors.

Why not just buy DDG, smear some Applesque high-design on it, and call it a day?

I keep thinking the same about Apple buying Yahoo.  Although I wonder if it would be cheaper for Apple to start from scratch than try to sort out Yahoo.

Apple can't afford another fiasco like their maps.  DDG has all the right avante-garde-security-feelgood buzz, too. Could be spun to make it look like it fits their culture.

Yes, they could make it work: iDuck???  Only, Apple is also in the mobile advertising biz and I would think they would want to data mine any Apple search engine, well for the same reasons Google does.  But if they are willing to give that up, it would be a good way to differentiate Apple mobile search from Google's Android.

They could just buy a custom feed from Yahoo.

Either way it could get interesting in the mobile search wars, and I tend to agree with the article I can't see Apple renewing with Google at this point, so it's rent or buy or cook their own.

I think that an Apple search engine would have been far more fun under Jobs.  "Here are results for what  you should have been searching for".   They're no fun without the mad guy.
