Why some people can't tell left from right

I could not reliably do this quickly until I was about 20. In sixth grade I had my first breakthrough - I could imagine myself saying the pledge of allegiance, but I would have to imagine myself walk out of the classroom, out of the school, down the street, attempting to account for every turn until I could line up my imaginary body with my physical body. My next breakthrough in maybe high school was being able to do that without doing all the twists and turns. Just imagine myself saying the pledge and then merge the imaginary and physical bodies in one step.

Somewhere in college, I learned to do this without imaging myself saying the pledge, but to this day, when I want to be sure, I still imagine myself saying the pledge of allegiance and it is still in that same sixth-grade classroom.

My mother had this issue, though I didn't know about it until she admitted it later.  She said she didn't really experience it until after she had a head injury when she fell off a horse when she was a kid.
