When I left Facebook in 2015, it felt like a fairly rare and individual move that was largely within a narrative of personal preference. Now I feel like it's a "cultural" thing that is largely within a narrative of danger, toxicity and threats to democracy.

And since all those things are true IMO, I don't see how Facebook turns it around and stays Facebook. FB could lose 50% of its customers and still have a huge and viable business, though the stock would tank. If they don't do something, it could turn into a death spiral. They are getting more revenue out of fewer users, so that means they are squeezing their users harder and harder, which means the ads and such will become more and more annoying which may chase more users away.

They're a long way from negative network effects being significant though. I feel like I'm still one of the few people in my circle not *directly* on Facebook (as I am constantly reminded, because of the outsize network effects of Facebook, I am constantly *indirectly* on Facebook).
