You would get along with my backyard neighbor. His rule is: never install a gate valve unless there is no other option.

He's right.  I have direct experience with much superior, 1950s top-of-the-line quality, US-made, real bronze gate valves going bad in 10 years.  Same for lavatory & toilet stops.

I buy household maintenance items that are prone to wear & tear or age-related failure and put them in storage.  Or, if we've found an item like a kitchen faucet that is perfect for the decor (and hard to replace when it goes obsolete in the future).  It's hard to spend the money in advance but using one when needed can save mega bucks & mega time.

....It gets a lot harder when the backup copy is a $400 kitchen faucet.

That's my practice for climbing shoes. The fit needs to be very precise and it's hard to find ones that fit. So when I do, I just buy two more pair and put them in storage. If I get wind they are being discontinued, I scour the web and try to find a couple pair while I still can.

Warm summer months tend to last 8 months of the year down here - when I find t-shirts, board shorts or vest tops that are a good fit I but 4 or 5 in assorted colours. A local Hurley and Vans factory discount store only 10 minutes from home gets good business from me and with spring already making an appearance I'll be stopping in pretty soon.
