That's cool. How did that pop up in your reading?

I know it was common to "edit" seventeenth-century paintings. One example is that men belonged to "jawbone" clubs where they would get together and talk. Paintings would depict them holding a jawbone, but fashion changed and people thought pictures of people holding jawbones were unseemly, so they would hire a painter to turn it into a hat.
