Quoteprocessed meat –– such as sausages, bacon, salami and burgers

I find this discussion of "processed" and "ultra-processed" pretty frustrating. All of those foods can be both minimally processed or highly processed.

What is the relationship between an organic, grass-fed burger from the local farmer and bologna from the Oscar Mayer factory?

The Plain English pod recently had a bona fide expert weigh in and he pointed out that a homemade bread made at home with white bread and sugar added would be considered a moderately-processed food while an organic whole-grain bread from Trader Joe's with a tiny bit of some "factory" ingredient would be considered "ultra-processed," even though almost every nutritionist would bet that the homemade bread was much worse for your health than the store bread.

>> sugary drinks

I started looking at some drinks lately. I was visiting family in TX and the standard advice in the endurance exercise world is to get 30gms of carbs within 30 minutes of exercise. Rummaging around my BIL's house, I realized that the sweetened lemonade they had delivered the full 30gms in just 8.5oz (250ml).

That made me realize 1) how overpriced most fancy sports drinks are and 2) how much liquid sugar people take in just through their drinks.
