Apparently, someone was using this forum to do mass IP lookup.  I updated the software and version of PHP to the latest and disabled host lookup.

I have had some spikes on my VPS, way beyond what should be happening from traffic, and have never figured it out.

Did you figure this out or was this the host tech staff? What was the evidence?
