NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Google booked record sales and earnings in the first half of this year, made a series of splashy acquisitions, and is on a hiring spree.

But in the eyes of Google chairman Eric Schmidt, the company is fighting for its survival.

That's the story Schmidt plans to spin Wednesday afternoon in the testimony he will deliver to a Senate panel looking into Google's growing dominance.

Yep, they've finally been noticed to be the fat arrogant monopoly that they are, and trying to defend against it.

Mr Schmidt told the senators: "Google does nothing to block access to any of the competitors and other sources of information."

That would seem to stretch the truth considering they apply penalties both automatically and by hand. And of course organic listings are continually being pushed further off the screen.
