It's a status thing.

I don't see why one would gaze at a 55" from 4" away instead of having a simple 23" monitor @ 2", at the same resolution. I wonder if people have turned their desks 90 degrees just to accommodate the huge monitors with their appropriate viewing distances.

AFAIAC one needs pixels, not inches. Ok in some professions one needs inches, not pixels  ;D But in ours: pixels. Dense pixels...

The only problem is that standard desk height puts the top of the screen slightly too high.

>status thing

No, a vision thing.  8 or so years ago, I began having on-going minor changes in my vision that was giving me hell when trying to focus on a screen for 6-8-10 hours a day.  I'd get new glasses and they'd last for about 6 months before I started noticing problems again.  My glasses cost about $650 and are not tax deductible. My screen cost $1800 and is a legit business deduction.  No brainer.

So how close are you to your (current) screen then? In other words: how big is your desk?

>big

It's more of a command center than a desk. U-shaped, about 9ft x 9ft x 9ft for the surrounding desktop  ...but  that's not really related, as the area I'm using for the big screen is normal desk size, though I do use an articulating drawer for my keyboard and trakball (VERY nice, highly recommended).

I currently have the screen about 3ft/1m away.

Lacks desk space, chunk.  Where would I put all my procrastination pile-files?  And those bezels bother me.  Drastic is probably up to 12 monitors nowadays but I never liked the idea of looking left or right in a multimontor setup.

Okay, we are getting close to my fantasy office here, pretty much mimicking the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek TOS:  Ultimate Command Recliner for the command chair, big ole TV size flat screen for a monitor straight ahead, wireless keyboard, Yeoman Janice Rand bringing me documents on tablets to sign.  :-)

bwahaha.

"we're gonna need a bigger office"
