I agree that the browser loss is a big deal and will be difficult for MS to overcome. Search quality, meh. Ad quality, meh. But, I think the biggest hindrance for Bing is that Google still has a better reputation than Microsoft. MS is perceived as lumbering and slow to adapt. Google still has some love out there from the "don't be evil" days. But I think Eric Schmidt has done a lot to hurt that.

I think Google are the new MS and MS are becoming the new Google....

The anti trust suits are lining up and there is a generation who know nothing but a Google led world online...

Agree with that, the MS sphere is so clunky.

I do also think Google are really starting to irritate, not sure I blame Eric (OK who else?)

I blame the personal data security. I think it is frightening how they have gently pushed open the door wider and wider.

This is so slow to happen though. I'm always surprised when some Google data/privacy issue came up and a friend said "At least it isn't Facebook."

Personally, I still use Google search because every time I do a blind search experiment, my results are always about the same: Google 70%, Bing 20% and Yahoo 10% of results.

Think global. People tell me that Bing is too US-centric so this might be keeping non-US and non-English speaking searchers from switching from Google.

I know the EU would like to split Google up. The problem is that you have to offer a viable alternative to Google before anyone is going to switch. If Bing isn't hacking it then, somebody needs to start building something better in order to beat Google or at least match them. If I were Germany I would be trying to encourage somebody to build a German language search engine. Same for France. Same, even for the UK. Own the niche. Yes it's expensive, but I don't think it is nearly as expensive as people make it out to be, or than it used to be, we've even discussed starting search engines here in the forums. I would use national pride, subtle or otherwise, to market them.

1. I don't think it healthy for large, developed countries to allow themselves to be dependent on one, foreign owned search engine.
2. Frankly, it distresses me that there are only two US search engines with unique databases.

Not by much except that MS isn't as scary anymore now that Apple has grown to help break the Windows monopoly.

I think Google is losing it's way, and people sense this. The NSA spying revelations have not helped either. But nobody has really bested them in search.

The NSA spying issue is just the beginning of the public finally realizing that G is EVIL

If let to continue, they will attempt to worm their way into every aspect of your life.
