That's a really great deal.  I remember when a low end box was like $500/month.

Yeah, it's what I was paying for a one VPS until last month when I got rid of it as too expensive.

Now even for VPS, I have a decent Linode plan for $20/mo

I don't even remember what the Crissic VPS cost - it was like $40/YR so I just grabbed it to be able to do rsync and mirror data.

Crissic do have really nice prices and have proven to be reliable. They were recently acquired by Quadranet.

Ramnode are great too.

For US based cheap dedis, Delimiter are pretty competitive but support is a bit poor https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Adelimitervps.com%2Flandingpage.

OVH are also in Canada and pretty much unbeatable on price, support not got a great rep either.

Correction - just got the renewal bill - $15/YEAR

Granted, it's only 512MB of memory, but as I say, it's for running rsync and such, not the next killer app to knock out Facebook

Oh yeah. Not that long ago that would have been considered a mid-grade machine. Certainly plenty for Wordpress or a medium Drupal install and it would serve static content like nobody's business.... and of course you could have it doing any number of tasks

I just never figured out anything other than backup that I wanted to do, but the price was low enough to lock in and keep for any and everything.

The crazy thing is, being a VPS, that includes a dedicated IP. Most shared hosting services charge you $1/month/IP. So you could say the cost of the server is $3/year. It's almost free hosting.
