When I was researching retirement, starting Soc Sec early at age 62 was fairly common --waiting late (age 70) was uncommon.  Starting early can cut the payout by 30+%, while waiting until 70 will boost it by 30+%.  One advisor's comment stuck with me; "Social Security is an inflation-indexed lifetime annuity! Have you ever priced one of those?" (They're outrageous.)
