As the article points out, this is mostly because Subarus haven't changed as much as other brands, for better and for worse

Yeah. Like the Honda CRV, they've morphed a couple of their famous off-road vehicles into more cushy SUVs.

The complaints I've read about Subaru cars a lot is that they tend to blow out their oil seals somewhere around 100k miles. Apparently, they don't use a proper gasket on the oil pan or head gaskets and instead use a silicone sealant.  The engines are suppose to be very reliable other than that.  Some, just proactively pull the engine and put in a proper gasket before 60k miles just to avoid the headache down the road.

Subaru always seems to be a mixture of old and new tech compared to others.  So like new KIA cars will all have LED lights all over the car, a New model Subaru will have some LED's some conventional light bulbs etc.   They never lead the way with the newest tech and I suspect they also use up what is in the parts bin.

That's what I noticed when I got my Subaru. My thought was that they used reliable old tech in places where it didn't really matter.

The thing that I liked about my Subaru is it had a CD player.  Nobody else does that.  You hardly notice it's just a thin slot.
