Why is the Blues Brothers so iconic?

I get it re Terminator, Star Wars, Ghost Busters and I liked BB, but -man- does it have sticking power in social media.

The suits and sunglasses. And Belushi and Ackroyd. And the music. And the shopping mall car chase. And the "We're on a mission from God" tagline.

I've seen it just once, during the original theater run, but you make me want to watch it again.

Why is any movie iconic? I think often it's a function of how old you were when the movie came out and how it spoke to you at that time.

Star Wars is such a touchstone for a certain generation (old enough to "get it" but young enough to collect the action figures). For me, it's a decent movie with fairly cringe acting.

Similar with the Harry Potter books. I enjoyed them, but my niece was the same age as Harry as she read the books (meaning she was 10 when the first book came out, 11 when the second book came out), and it just rocked her world.

For me, it's Jeremiah Johnson. It is the only movie movie I saw more than once growing up in those pre-VHS, pre-cable TV days. It came out when I was in fifth grade and my two closest friends and I decided we would live our lives like Jeremiah. We were young enough still that the concept of just how hard it would be to get dates if we lived like Jeremiah did not cross our minds. But the feeling of total freedom and a life in the outdoors spoke to us deeply.

I'm was thinking it is most definitely anti-establishment, f*ck you police.

Music? It had music? hhh. I don't recall any music but for what little music I care about, it would have to be from the Canned Heat era.

So we've noticed.
