That's interesting data and it isn't really a surprise that California and Hawaii would be at the bottom of the list.  I wonder though how those places with the highest income pocketing translate for a young couple getting started today.  Do places like South Dakota and Iowa have opportunity for transplants, or strong data all from established people running on family momentum?

I'm wondering if an agricultural economy plays into some of these numbers.  Agricultural dependent people are used to having bad years and good years so they tend to squirrel away savings as a buffer for bad years.  And maybe, they just do without.

In the Midwest in general (fly-over country), there are a lot of slowly dying small towns and this tends to depress prices so you can pick up a pre-existing house for a lot less than the same house near a big city.

I was going to post about this in its own thread a week or so ago after traveling through a couple of them with boarded-up Main Streets.  We have dozens just in this area --mostly old farm supply, lumber, railroad sidings, or combinations of those. A few that are within a 30-minute drive of larger 'hub' towns or cities are getting reanimated as residential suburbs.

>agricultural economy

I'm sure it does, but can't quite figure out how.
