David Copp came across a fishing trawler moored in Ilfracombe Harbour he took great offence and complained about the "disgusting" smell.

The 46-year-old was outraged that his children, aged seven and nine, had been forced to endure the sight of 12 crates of dead fish and crabs, piled up on the quayside.

He said the ordeal had left them "quite distressed" and demanded to know why the harbourmaster was not more considerate to tourists.

I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible. But, pissing everyone off is a piece of cake!

Well, since harbours were originally intended for tourism, I can see his point.

God forbid he should ever have to walk his kids past a butchers shop - I understand that some of them actually have bits of dead animals in them!

It's all a giant theme park.  The people working - the fishermen are just supposed to look quaint I suppose.

Did you know that harbours have ...[gulp]... sailors in em as well!?!? You know the lot: smelly, rude, half-toothless, rum on their breath, covered in flies and whathaveyou... I kid you not.

I mean really, Great Britain is an island after all and I think I read somewhere that you are never more than 50 miles from the sea, plus there is that whole Nelson and Trafalgar thing, you would think everyone would be used to the sights, smells and sounds of a harbor.

The housing market crash has taken the pressure off for now, but our coastal fishermen were being displaced by waterfront developers and tourists at a fairly rapid pace. All but the most remote of fishing villages are now condo-ized.

Though...I thought you could not sell dead crabs...Don't crabs have to be alive seconds before you cook them?  Why did this ship have dead crabs?  Are they used as bait?

I'm just relieved the tourists weren't from the US...
