I suspect it is all about feelings,

yeah, feelings raise some interesting points for us all I suspect - I have several clients who have a brand percieved as targeted at a specific demographic or with a certain image. Relaunched as another site selling only cheap/quality/trendy/red products I think they could easily get an extra chunk of the market. How you find the time and cash to do that is tricky though. Affiliate? It would be nice (from my POV) if there were a few more affiliates who used some imagination and developed their own brands rather than did the voucher code and price comparison model (sorry Doug!)

Well Jason, I can do a goods mates rate, so let me know which you fancy. Both are lovely, but honestly, I see you in the leather more than the Hucklecote.  They are extremely country.  Quite interesting you picked that one out.

PM or phone if you wold like one.

I love your facial expression Rupert on the Smart Classic style leather waistcoat photo  ;D
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible. But, pissing everyone off is a piece of cake!

Found another hurdle yesterday, along the lines of having to register to ...

Was hunting for some domestic software, did my research, found the one I think is best suited to my needs, went to download a trial version, and ...

... had to open a membership account just to download the trial version. Annoying as all getout that they have my information now and all I wanted to do was see if the software came up to spec and my requirements. Woe betide them if I start getting spam! Grrr!!!

It is in a somewhat competitive market to do with crafts so I can understand their logic to a certain extent, and I will probably buy the product, but it still feels annoying.

Oh, and another one, get your Product Titles salable rather than right.

Was looking for a skinning knife, found one made by a well reputed German company called D1ck, (spelled correctly of course). You can see where this is going. The product was labeled as a "D1ck Skinning Knife", again spelled corectly.

I backed away with a strange sensation in the nether regions.

Seriously Woz.  I thought you were joking:

(Remove star with correct letter.)

I guess you can't make stuff like that up.

Shipping is the one that consistently comes up in testing for us across pretty much any store.  People are almost irrational about it. I've personally spoken with customers who spent £5 more on an an item to save £4.50 shipping.  Honestly, the phone goes oddly quiet after they say it aloud.

Free shipping is oddly powerful. I try to get merchants to at least test it.

>>Free shipping is oddly powerful.

True that.  I'm a sucker for free shipping.  My purchasing from Amazon (US) when way up once they started that free shipping thing.

I found this book to be an excellent read.. http://www.amazon.com/Predictably-Irrational-Hidden-Forces-Decisions/dp/006135323X

Lots of examples and experiments.

Explains just why we are suckers for things like free shipping, how simply giving us choices can influence us, how prices effects our behaviour(eg. no matter how bad they made it taste when people were told a beer was premium they preferred it over the non premium), how brands burrow in to our subconscious(how our brains light up when shown brand logos - light up massively when show coke logo even if we claim to prefer pepsi)

I am always battling with the free shipping option for both of the views you guys have put forward, looking competitive on first impressions and on comparison type sites against the power of offering free shipping. Has anyone tested this by switching and seeing how it has effected conversions?

If I have to register to buy then I must have to really, really want the item from that shop and that shop only to proceed. Otherwise I click off as it is an annoying waste of my time.

If it doesn't display shipping before I register then I do not buy, it actually annoys me, it is terrible customer service. I think if they are that ignorant of my needs at this stage of the sale the last thing I want to do is proceed further.
