upgraded my phone yesterday and the contract I am on means I could of changed to any phone free of charge, had the choice of iphone 4 or 5 or the Samsung galaxy S3

its not that often I get excited about a product and granted its early days but the galaxy S3 is the best phone I have ever had dating back to my first phone in 1989
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible. But, pissing everyone off is a piece of cake!

Louise had the s1 and upgraded to the s3 a few weeks ago. Our family is loaded with iphones and the samsungs often make them jealous.  I took the s1 with no contract and use it as a camera or email appliance.  Several apps for reading stuff like vehichle obdii data or polling tire pressures with bluetooth are only avail on android.

You chose wisely.

Of course now you need to root it without bricking it. 8)

I actually have 2 S1s that are not on a cell plan -bought the other off Craigslist months ago for $75 new in box.  As they don't have the newest flavor of android, I should root one just to play with it. But, screw it, this stuff is getting so cheap that it's hardly worth the time.

As-is, they make great mini-tablet-email-reader-media-player-alarm-clocks.

Can't beat these for £50 - http://www.storageoptions.com/products/scroll/tablets/scroll-pocket

My kids are going to be so happy this Xmas and I will finally get my phone back :)

Pro tip: If you still have war-horse XP laptops around that have a limit (8gb??) on reading flash drives AND you might possibly want to transfer stuff between your phones/tablets to one of those laptops, don't buy the -now cheap- 16gb mini-sds for the phone. The laptop will smoke them. Found out the hard way.

Had no idea Android had OBDii reading software so finally I have a use for my Nexus 7 which I despise.

>OBDii

Yeah, bluetooth dongle on amazon was $14, or thereabouts.  Pro app (Torque Pro) was $5.

The combination of apps and bluetooth is going to be deadly disruptive for the old vehicle aftermarket stuff.

Just wondering if this could be a bluefin competitor, great money in these superchips. Hummmmm

Yeah, I keep using my wife's old Motorola Droid as just that.  I've even used it to ssh into a server on occasion.  I hate to say it, but those things make a perfect bathroom computer.  We both seem to like the thumb-pad models more, though its a personal preference.

I hate the browser and I hate the app-view of gmail, but the phone will sit there for days on one battery charge sniffing wifi and giving me a quickview of what's in my inbox. It's even faster than opening the cover on the ipad.

On the S1 (2? 3?) you can put it in airplane mode and then go back in and just turn on wifi. The battery will last for about 4 days that way since it's not constantly polling the cell signal.
