How listening to music 'significantly impairs' creativity

I am glad they studied different types of music, but I am surprised that they didn't get differing results.

I have to be really careful about combining music with work. I've never been able to listen to music while working at anything very cerebral. I end up too focused on the music instead of the thing I should be doing.

Many moons ago I was at a hockey game with my husband, and at the moment of the game-changing goal, the thing I was noticing most was, "Wow, cool, the organist used a flat sixth chord for that sequence. That really works!"

I find it easier to listen to and tune out talk radio than music. That said, I find the best background for focused work, whether creative or just thorny technical problems (which often require a lot of creative, lateral thinking) is *always* silence.

Long solo road trips are the best!  I took the radio out of my Sprinter van and could do the same for all my vehicles except I like the clock.
